CHECKLIST

10 things every small business website needs

By Mark Desider · October 29, 2026 · 5 min read

A great website doesn’t need to be complicated. It needs to answer a visitor’s questions quickly, earn their trust and make the next step obvious. Use this checklist to see where your site stands.

The essentials

  1. A clear headline above the fold. Within a few seconds, a visitor should know what you do, who it’s for and where you work.
  2. One obvious next step. “Call now,” “Book a visit” or “Get a quote,” repeated at natural points down the page.
  3. A great experience on phones. Tap-friendly buttons, readable text and a phone number that dials when tapped.
  4. Speed. Large, uncompressed photos are the most common reason small business sites feel slow.
  5. Real photos. Your team, your space and your work build far more trust than stock images.

Trust builders

  1. Reviews and testimonials. Real words from real customers, with names when they’re comfortable sharing them.
  2. Examples of your work. A portfolio, gallery or short case studies that show results, not just promises.
  3. Contact details everywhere. Phone, email, service area and hours in the footer of every page.

Behind the scenes

  1. Search basics. Unique page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, Google Search Console and a complete Google Business Profile. Our guide to getting found on Google in Monmouth County walks through it.
  2. Privacy, security and care. HTTPS, spam protection on forms, a privacy policy if you collect any information, and someone keeping software up to date.

If your site checks most of these boxes, you’re ahead of many competitors. If it doesn’t, start with the first three. They make the biggest difference the fastest.
